Prevalence of frailty and factors associated with frailty in the hospitalized elderly

Abstract:

Introduction: One of the expected consequences of society aging is an increase in the number of frail elderly. Frailty if persistent, It probably has consequences for the individual and social life of the elderly in society. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence and frailty-related factors were assessed in the elderly hospitalized. Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study on 120 elderly patients hospitalized in selected hospitals of Iran University of Medical Sciences that were included in the study by convenience sampling method. Data via demographic characteristics Form and Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) Questionnaire it was gathered. Data analysis by independent t-test, analysis of variance and Pearson correlation coefficient, using SPSS software version 22 was performed. Results: 64/2% of the elderly were men. The mean age of the elderly was 68.3 ± 8.11. 62.5% of research samples were frail. The social domain was identified as the most common and pervasive domain of frailty. Psychological and physical domains of frailty were also ranked next in terms of prevalence, respectively. frailty also with different demographic characteristics such as age (P= 0/026), gender (P= 0/021), marital status (P= 0/035), lifestyle (P= 0/014), etc. had a statistically significant relationship. Conclusion: Based on the findings, total frailty as well as separately in all three physical, psychological and social domains is relatively common among the elderly hospitalized and is affected by various factors.
